“Now I’m going to turn the lights off, so it’s going to get really dark down here. Everyone got their rocks?”

The group said yes, although they wondered why it mattered in the dark. “Here we go,” she said, and pulled a lever on the wall. Darkness indeed filled the room, but so did something else—color! The group gasped and looked around them. The walls, the stones, everything was glowing! Reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues!

“Look at your rocks!” Jamal shouted.

“Mine’s red!” Chelsea shouted.

“Mine’s green and yellow!” Maya yelled.

“Mine’s glowing blue!” exclaimed Simon.

“Hey, rocks really DO rock!” joked Cooper.

Everyone compared colors until Miss Malone turned the lights back on. “The mine is full of florescent minerals running through the rock. You can keep yours. They glow when ultraviolet light shines on them. Pretty cool, right?” she asked.

Everyone agreed that it was one of the coolest things they’d ever seen.
